How to use Gnostic Books
A private AI assistant for browsing your Gnostic library (335+ books) and reading cited pages.
1. Start a chat
Click + New Chat in the left sidebar to begin a fresh conversation — or just start typing; a chat is created automatically.
Type your question in the box at the bottom and press Enter or Send.
Each chat keeps its own history — switch between chats from the sidebar, rename by clicking ✏️, or delete with 🗑.
2. Ask questions
Ask about any topic, e.g. "What does the library teach about pranayama?"
Book-specific: name a book and the answer is limited to it, e.g. "Which techniques does THE AWAKENING OF THE CONSCIOUSNESS describe?".
Get quotes: ask for a number, e.g. "List 10 quotes master Samael talks about Love" or "Give me 5 quotes about pranayama" — the app retrieves widely and returns distinct quotes with citations.
For precise references, ask for citations: "cite book title and page numbers".
3. Read the cited pages
Answers include clickable citations like [Book, Page N].
Click a citation — the full book opens in the right-hand PDF viewer, scrolled to that exact page, and the referenced passage is highlighted in yellow.
If all claims come from one page, the citation appears once at the bottom as 📖 Book — Page N.
Use the viewer toolbar (‹ Prev / Next › / Go) to move between pages.
On a phone, use the 📖 button in the top bar to open/close the book viewer.
4. Retry an answer
Each question has a ↻ button — click it to remove the last answer and re-ask the same question.
5. Appearance
Open ⚙ Settings to change font size, font family, line spacing, and the question/answer background colors (with preset palettes).
Settings are saved automatically and remembered next time.
Tips: Naming a book (e.g. "in ALCHEMY, what...") answers from that book only — great for studying a single text. Asking for "N quotes" surfaces distinct quotes from across the library. Every citation is clickable and highlights the exact passage on the page.
6. Privacy & performance
Everything runs locally — Ollama (embeddings), rapid-mlx (gemma LLM), and the app. Nothing leaves your Mac.
Answers stream in a few seconds; very broad questions across the whole library can take up to a minute.
